Mid-Century Solid 18k Gold Large Mexican Folkart Diablo Mask Pendant

One of the crazier pieces I’ve ever come across. Handcrafted most likely in Mexico sometime around the mid 1900’s out of solid 18k gold is this large folkart Devil “Diablo” mask pendant. Known around cultural hotspots like Taxco, Mexico artisans would handcraft “folkart” cultural masks just like you see here out of tin or wood to sell to visiting tourists as well costume and silver jewelry. But to find fine jewelry like so is something I have very seldom seen. A heavyweight base of solid 18k yellow gold the slightly rose gold horns and mouth with yellow gold eyes and nose were all cut out, etched, and layered on top to add extra dimension and 2D realism. With subtle whiskers and a cross carved in between the eyes, to ward off the evil spirits, there is more folklore that goes into this piece that meets the eye. A large heavy duty hinged bail on the back end adds to maneuverability of the large piece that weighs 21.6g and measures approximately 2” x 2”. Artist signed what appears to be CC I’ve been trying to research this one for quite a long time and still have found nothing which makes it even that much more cool to me. You’ll be the only one around with a piece this unique I can guarantee you that.
